The degree program in Histotechnology is designed to prepare students with the essential skills, techniques and specialized competencies required in the field of histotechnology. Histotechnicians assist pathologists in preparing tissues removed in surgery or autopsy for microscopic evaluation and are needed in industry, government facilities, health care institutions, and research institutions.
The Science Laboratory Technology—Histotechnology option degree program provides the student with the opportunity to acquire proficiency in the processing, sectioning, and staining of human tissue for microscopic evaluation. Under this cooperative program, students will complete their classroom instruction at Chesapeake College and their clinical laboratory experience at Harford Community College. Upon successful completion of this program, the student will graduate from Harford Community College and will be eligible to take the National Registry Examination for certification in histotechnology. Students should consult with the Allied Health Department Chair in planning an appropriate program.
Field work, clinical placements, and Certification/licensure may involve drug testing and/or background checks performed at the student’s expense.
