What if I do not like what the consultant tells me?
Consultants act as educated readers and share their reactions to your writing, but the writing always belongs to you.  You can choose to incorporate all or none of the consultant's suggestions.  The consultants are here to assist you and help clarify your thoughts; however, the writing is yours and you are responsible for the content of the finished product.

What should I do to get writing help when I work and cannot come to the Academic Support Center during the hours it is open?
We now have hours on Sunday at the Wye Mills Campus, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. If you cannot come on Sunday, consider using the Online Writing assistance. Just email your paper as an attachment in MS Word format, and you will receive a response within 48 hours.

You can also call and talk to a consultant on the telephone.

While face-to-face consultations are most effective, emailing and telephoning can help to troubleshoot many problems.

Will you edit my paper for me? Can I just drop it off, let you make changes, and pick it up later?
If there are grammar problems, consultants will help you identify some of them and find solutions following suggestions in the current English handbook or in one of our handouts. However, we do not identify and correct each grammar/mechanics error in your writing. Instead we act as educated readers who are aware of the elements of effective writing. We will share our reactions and ask questions to assist you in identifying  revisions to make your writing clearer and more logical. The best revisions come after talking about your ideas and your writing with an educated reader.

Nevertheless, you are responsible for making changes to your writing. We cannot edit the paper for you or accept papers that are dropped off. If you stay and go over the writing with a consultant, you will learn more about a writer's tools and techniques.

How often should I come  and how long will it take to go over my writing?
An analysis of the data from FY 2001 showed that over 93% of the students who visited the Academic Support Center four or more times received a grade of "C" or better in the courses for which they sought Writing Center support. There may be several reasons for this finding, but it does suggest that the more times you analyze your writing and consider revisions, the more knowledge you will gain on how to revise effectively. So come often!

Most consultations take about 30 minutes. Some students work on papers for several hours, moving back and forth from the computer to the consultant a number of times until the work is finished. You are welcome to stay in the Academic Support Center as long as you want and talk to one of the consultants as many times as you mutually agree are necessary.
