Skipjack women earn first victory
Thomas scores 19 in tournament win over Central Penn
BEL AIR Lowell Shaw was a little worried about playing two games in two days with a seven-player roster, but his Chesapeake College women’s basketball team was up to the challenge.
Chesapeake shrugged off Friday’s 61-34 loss to Salem (NJ) Community College, bouncing back to beat Central Pennsylvania Community College, 63-44, Saturday afternoon. Sherrie Thomas scored a game-high 19 points and Monette Malabet added 17 points and eight rebounds for the victorious Skipjacks (1-1) as they gained a split in the Harford Community College Tournament.
"We played really good defense and we outrebounded Penn, 36-26," said Shaw after Saturday’s victory. "We also cut our turnovers nearly in half (19 against Central Penn compared to 33 against Salem). The girls did a very good job coming back from a disappointing opening game."
Chesapeake, which had a 31-25 halftime lead, featured a balanced scoring attack as Chanae DeShields (11 points) and Yaasmyin Finlayson (10 points, eight rebounds) joined Thomas and Malabet in double figures.
Emily Kozak led Central Penn with 15 points.
The Skipjacks play at Harcum (Pa.) Community College Tuesday evening.
Salem (NJ) CC 61, Chesapeake College 34

Chanae DeShields scored a team-high 15 points for Chesapeake.
