Loper, Parks help Cecil oust ’Jacks from state tourney
Thomas posts double-double in final game for Chesapeake
NORTH EAST Ashley Loper scored a game-high 22 points and teammate Kay Parks added 21 Thursday as Cecil Community College defeated Chesapeake College, 62-47, to oust the Skipjacks from the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference women’s basketball state tournament.
Loper, who scored 32 points in a regular-season win over the Skipjacks, was held somewhat in check. Parks, however, more than made up the difference with her offensive contributions.
"Parks is the one who killed us this time," said Chesapeake head coach Lowell Shaw. "She was knocking down her shots, especially in the second half."
The Skipjacks, meanwhile, weren’t making the most of their offensive opportunities.
"We had good looks we just couldn’t hit the shots," said Shaw, whose team finished the season 4-13.
Sophomore Sherrie Thomas, who finished fourth in the state in scoring and ninth in rebounding, led the Skipjacks with 19 points and 13 rebounds in her final game for the Skipjacks. Yaasmiyn Finlayson, who was 10th in the state in rebounding, added nine boards.
Chanae DeShields (14 points) and Anitra Cannon (10 points) also reached double digits for the Skipjacks.
