Skipjacks sweep softball doubleheader from PG
Garey drives in eight runs as Chesapeake College halts skid
LARGO The Skipjacks, with nine losses in their previous 10 women’s softball games, took out their frustrations on Prince George’s Community College Friday afternoon.
Chesapeake College overwhelmed the Owls, 24-2 and 19-2, as Jen Garey continued her torrid hitting and two pitchers earned complete-game wins. Garey went 4-for-9 with eight RBI in the doubleheader to support the pitching efforts of Game 1 winner Heather Lawrence and Game 2 victor Liz Kinsey.
"We worked our way into a rut and now we’re working our way out of it," said Chesapeake head coach Melissa Thompson. "I was pleased with our effort. While there’s still room for improvement, we came out and played aggressively and really swung the bat well."
Heather Duncan had three hits and three RBI in the opener, while Garey (triple, two RBI) and Laura Foster (four runs scored, six RBI) each had two hits. Lawrence allowed no earned runs while throwing a two-hitter and striking out seven in the five-inning contest.
Garey had two more hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in six runs in Game 2. Beth Morris went 4-for-4 with three RBI while Courtney Jackson (two RBI) and Hannah Kelley (RBI) each had two hits.
Kinsey spaced seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in Game 2, which was called after four innings.
The Skipjacks now get a well-deserved rest, before hosting Anne Arundel Community College Saturday at noon.
"We’ve just gone through a span where we’ve played 14 games in 12 days. That’s a lot of ball," said Thompson. I think we can use a short rest."
