Skipjacks Ringgold, Perez earn regional honors
Ringgold part of Region XX regular-season, all-tournament squads
WYE MILLS Freshman middle hitters Kyra Ringgold and Verushka Perez, who led Chesapeake College’s re-entry into women’s volleyball this fall, have both earned NJCAA Region XX honors for their efforts.
Ringgold (North Caroline High) and Perez (Westside-Augusta High/Ga.) were both named to the all-Region XX honorable mention list. Ringgold was also selected for the Region XX all-tournament team after helping the underdog Skipjacks (4-10) force last Saturday’s pool play into an extra round of playoffs with their upset win over Harford Community College.
"Kyra had a very good tournament for us," said Chesapeake head coach Jay Covey. "She’s been our rock this season. It’s great to see her selected for the all-tournament team that’s a pretty good honor."
Covey was also pleased to have both Ringgold and Perez representing Chesapeake on the all-Region XX honorable mention list.
"I think that’s pretty good for us to have two players on the all-Region XX team," Covey said.
Perez was third in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference in aces (1.13 per game) and 10th in blocks per game (0.67). Ringgold was ninth in kills with 126 in 39 games (3.23 per game).
Freshman setter Chelsea Cohee (Colonel Richardson High) finished ninth in the state in assists (7.26 per game) while freshman outside hitter Tiara Whye (Kent County High) was ninth in blocks (0.68 per game).
The Skipjacks finished their season on a high note, winning three of their final five matches (including playoffs) before Harford edged Chesapeake, 30-28, to help break a tie for second place in the regional tournament’s Pool B.
