Turner’s last-minute jumper allows Skipjacks to win opener
Chesapeake nips Baltimore City, 69-68, as Calloway scores 25 points
BALTIMORE Irene Turner, who scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, hit the game-winning jumper with 22 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon as the Skipjacks won their opener.
Chesapeake with only one sophomore on its roster trailed by 12 points (55-43) with less than 11 minutes remaining before outscoring BCCC, 26-13, the rest of the way.
"We played really tough defense in an all-out press," said Chesapeake head coach Lowell Shaw of the Skipjacks’ comeback. "It’s a big win for us. When you have a bunch of freshmen who come through in a big game, that’s a great feeling."
Fatima Calloway scored a game-high 25 points and added nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals to lead the Skipjacks. Kiki Pettiford scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jady Bell (seven points), Kyra Ringgold (two points), and Yaasmiyn Finlayson (one point) also reached the scoring column for the Skipjacks.
The Skipjacks play at Prince George’s Community College Tuesday at 5 p.m.
