Skipjacks stun Cecil with ninth-inning comeback
Armiger´s two-out single scores Kelch for 5-4 triumph
WYE MILLS, March 31 – Chesapeake College´s baseball team just couldn´t come up with any clutch hits – at least until the ninth inning.
Justin Armiger´s two-out single scored Mike Kelch with the tie-breaking run Thursday afternoon to cap a four-run ninth inning as the Skipjacks stunned host Cecil Community College, 5-4. Winning pitcher Matt Clark, who came on with two outs in the eighth, retired the Seahawks in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
"To be a good team, you have to win on the road and you have to be able to come from behind," said Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski, whose team improved to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference. "I´m really proud of the way my guys just wouldn´t quit."
Trailing 4-1, Chesapeake´s Jimmy Carroll (2-for-4) and Clarke Rollins opened the ninth inning with singles. Ryan Bell then singled home Carroll, and Kelch (2-for-4) reached on an infield error that plated Rollins to make it 4-3. Chad Wolfe´s bunt single loaded the bases.
Cecil reliever Scott Rothwell induced Kevin Weems into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Bell and moved Kelch to third. That set the stage for Armiger, who capped his 2-for-5 day with what proved to be the game-winning hit.
Chesapeake starting pitcher Bryan Brainer allowed only three hits in 7 2/3 innings while striking out six and walking five. Clark allowed one walk and no hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.
"Bryan was just sensational against one of the top-hitting teams in JuCo, and Matt pitched great to nail it down for us," said Szymanski.
Cecil (8-6, 6-4) took a 2-0 lead on Nick Hernandez´s two-out, two-run double in the first inning. Rollins (2-for-3) doubled home a sixth-inning run to get the Skipjacks within 2-1, but Cecil put together a two-run eighth inning that featured Mike Wilson´s RBI double.
CCBC-Dundalk 6, Chesapeake 1
DUNDALK – John Zorich spaced four hits over eight innings Wednesday afternoon to hand the Skipjacks their first league loss of the season.
Justin Armiger went 2-for-4 and scored Chesapeake´s only run.
Chesapeake plays a noon doubleheader at Montgomery College/Germantown Saturday.
