Skipjacks Markey, Turner hit all-star homers
Markey ends his JuCo career with 3-for-4 effort; Turner excels in first frosh game
WALDORF Chesapeake College’s Andrew Markey and Michael Turner made sure to end their respective baseball seasons with a bang.
Markey, a sophomore, completed his junior college baseball career by going 3-for-4 with a home run in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference All-Star Game. Turner hit a home run in the first Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference Freshman All-Star Game.
In an example of geographic irony, Markey (North Caroline High) and Turner (St. Michaels High) each played on the losing Western All-Stars despite playing for the league’s eastern-most institution.
Skipjacks Jake Garvey (North Dorchester High), Gary Blackledge, Derek Richards, and Jesse Savage also played in the sophomore game. Chris Bell, Ryan Staton and Daniel Miller joined Turner as Chesapeake representatives in the freshman contest.
"We had a lot of players who had good years, and those good years were rewarded when the all-star teams were selected," said Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski after nine of his players participated in the two contests.
Chesapeake went 34-15 and reached the Region XX Final Four for the second time in five years. The Skipjacks finished in second place in the 16-team Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference, going 20-8 in the league as they reached 20 conference wins for the second straight season.
Kinney, Wright, Morris named all-state in softball
Three Chesapeake College women’s softball players have been named to the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference all-state teams.
Pitcher/outfielder Jordan Wright (North Dorchester High) and second baseman Erica Kinney were named to the all-state first team. First baseman Anna Morris (Easton High) was named to the second team.
Wright, Kinney and Morris played integral roles in the Skipjacks’ third-place conference finish, which they followed up on by winning the college’s first Region XX softball title in 28 years.
