Piasecki impressive in return for Skipjacks
Sophomore blanks Del Tech as Region XX champions post two shutouts
WYE MILLS Jill Piasecki returned to the Chesapeake College pitching mound and took up where she left off.
Piasecki, one of the top softball pitchers in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference before being hit in the face with a line drive in last year’s Region XX tournament, shut out Delaware Tech/Owens Campus, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. The sophomore earned the win with a complete-game three-hitter as Courtney Aubel doubled home sophomore all-American Jordan Wright with a first-inning run that stood up.
"Jill sort of cruised through them," said Skipjacks head coach Durrie Hayes. "She got her drop pitch working and hit her spots. She didn’t miss a beat."
Wright and Kelsi Robinson then combined on a five-hit shutout as the Skipjacks blanked Del Tech again, 5-0, to complete the sweep. Wright walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to break a scoreless tie, then added a run-scoring hit in a four-run sixth inning that broke the game open.
Brenda Murphy also had an RBI hit in the sixth-inning explosion and Melanie Buck helped out with a bunt that was played into a two-run error.
Chesapeake, the reigning NJCAA Division II Region XX champion, opened its fall season Saturday with losses to a pair of NCAA Division I opponents.
Georgetown University drilled the Skipjacks, 10-0, but Chesapeake was much more competitive in a 6-5 loss to Morgan State University. The Skipjacks, in fact, built 4-0 and 5-3 leads in that game before MSU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
