Frederick CC holds off Chesapeake College
Skipjacks give up late leads in both Games 1 and 2
WYE MILLS The Skipjacks rallied from large deficits to take the lead in each of the first two games, but couldn’t hold on Thursday in a 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18 women’s volleyball loss to Frederick.
"This was by far the best we’ve played this year," said Chesapeake head coach Jay Covey, whose team fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference. "Lexi (Holder) and O’Sha (Adams) both set last year, and I’m trying to put more responsibility on them and take some of the pressure off the freshmen. Both Lexi and O’Sha are playing really well."
Chesapeake overcome 8-1 and 11-4 deficits in Game 1, taking a 21-20 lead as Holder served three aces in a 4-0 run. Holder, however, then sent a serve long, two Skipjack hitter errors followed, and Frederick’s Cieara Meyer came up with consecutive blocks to finish out the game.
In Game 2, the Skipjacks broke an 18-18 tie with three straight points, the last one an ace by Adams. Frederick, however, responded with a 7-0 run to end the game, finished off by a Sara Gartrell ace.
The Skipjacks also stayed close in Game 3, trailing only 18-16 before Frederick (5-3, 3-1) completed the sweep with a 7-2 surge.
