Serious Skipjacks secure a pair of sweeps
Chesapeake College’s latest win streak hits five games
WYE MILLS With the playoffs approaching, baseball becomes a serious business.
"Everybody’s up and into the games," said Skipjack Zack Larson after Chesapeake College swept league doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. "There’s no horsing around everybody knows the job they have to do and they get it done so we can keep rolling."
Chesapeake College (24-7 overall, 13-3 Maryland JuCo) got the job done against both Community College Baltimore County-Essex and Anne Arundel Community College as the Skipjacks ran their latest winning streak to five games. Chesapeake swept Essex, 9-0 and 6-2, on Saturday and then took two from AACC, 11-5 and 8-4, on Sunday.
Sunday’s sweep of Anne Arundel (10-20, 3-15) marked the Skipjacks’ fifth and six games in four days and was doubly important, counting in both the league and regional standings.
"It’s been a lot of games in a short amount of time," said Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski, whose Skipjacks are the only undefeated team (3-0) in Region XX play. "They were able to keep focused and play well. I told them I was proud of them."
The Skipjacks play at Hagerstown Community College Tuesday in another game that counts in both in the state and region standings, then travel to Montgomery College/Germantown Thursday for a league contest, with both games starting at 3 p.m.
Chesapeake remains in second place in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference behind Frederick Community College (32-2, 16-0). The Skipjacks host Frederick April 20th in a doubleheader that could be a state title showdown.
