Fernandez scores twice as AACC tops Chesapeake, 6-0
WYE MILLS Tyler Fernandez scored a pair of first-half goals as the Skipjacks fell into a 4-0 halftime hole for the second straight game, but Chesapeake College head men’s soccer coach Mark Dennis saw some bright spots in Saturday’s 6-0 loss to the Pioneers.
"The score wasn’t indicative of the game. We possessed the ball almost an equal amount of time and were right there with them on shots on goal," said Dennis, noting the Pioneers’ narrow, 7-6 shots advantage. "We are creating offense but just not finding a way to finish and get the goals."
AACC goalie Emmanuel Mendoza earned the shutout with several spectacular saves, according to Dennis, who also praised Chesapeake goalie Lucas Hayman.
Fernandez scored just 90 seconds into the game and capped the first-half flurry by scoring off a direct kick just outside of the penalty box. In between, Dane Slavin and Jeremy Harsanyi also had first-half goals for the Pioneers (3-3 overall, 2-0 Maryland JuCo).
Chesapeake (0-2, 0-2) travels to CCBC-Essex Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest.
