Parks, Goldberg breeze to Chesapeake net titles
Carmean’s string of upsets ends in girls’ final as Parks wins big points
WYE MILLS Unseeded underdog Katie Carmean had her chances early, but top-seeded Madison Parks won all the big points to take control of Sunday’s girls’ singles final in the Chesapeake College Junior Tennis Tournament.
Parks fought off six game points in the first two games and then breezed to a 6-1 and 6-0 win over her North Caroline High School teammate.
"I just tried to keep it in play and keep the points going as long as I could," said Parks after winning the tightly contested first two games on the way to a quick 4-0 lead. "It (taking control early) was important because Katie is a really good player. She’s gotten much better in the last year."
Carmean, who played second doubles for the Bulldogs last spring, knocked off third-seeded teammate Morgan Parks and then took out second-seeded Christy Nave (Queen Anne’s County High) in Saturday’s first two rounds. She said she dedicated herself to the game after Mike Parks North Caroline High’s girls’ tennis coach and the father of Madison and Morgan Parks "kept bugging me to come out for the team as a freshman."
"I decided I liked it and wanted to improve," said Carmean, a junior who takes private lessons in addition to playing regularly to improve her game.
While Carmean is catching up to some of North Caroline’s best players, Madison Parks just a sophomore proved too steady even in Sunday’s wind-blown final. She won the final eight games and won all six of her service games. In three rounds, Parks lost a total of two games.
Top-seeded Matthew Goldberg of Queen Anne’s County High was even more dominant in the boys’ singles draw, losing no games in his two matches. Goldberg defeated second-seeded Carson Fulmer of Kent Island High, 6-0 and 6-0, in Sunday’s boys’ singles final.
"I played hard and I served well," said Goldberg in summing up the finals, adding the gusting wind "wasn’t really much of a factor."
