’Jacks sweep two at women’s hoop mixer
Jones nets pair of double-doubles to pace balanced team efforts
ARNOLD The Skipjacks didn’t spread a whole lot of good cheer at the Anne Arundel Community College Women’s Basketball Holiday Mixer. Instead, they gave themselves an early Christmas gift with a two-game sweep of their mixer schedule in their final December games.
Ashleigh Jones registered double-doubles in both games as Chesapeake College defeated Garrett College, 67-51, on Friday (Dec. 17) and downed Montgomery County (Pa.) Community College, 58-44, on Saturday (Dec. 18). Jones went for 22 points and 11 rebounds against Garrett and then posted 17 points and 10 boards in the Montgomery County triumph.
The Skipjacks (6-7) used similar scripts in the victories as Chesapeake’s balance overcome individual brilliance.
Deja Acree and Ashley Molock scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, against Garrett, which lost despite a game-high 20 points from sophomore forward Alice Abiya. Acree (11), Molock (11) and Ravin Sterling (10) all joined Jones in double figures to beat Montgomery County despite sophomore forward Mercedes Harris’ 31 points.
"We weren’t going to let one person beat us," said Chesapeake head coach Damon Nichols of his team’s philosophy heading into the mixer. "We let their stars (Abiya and Harris, respectively) get their points and just contained everyone else."
That strategy was particularly effective against Montgomery as Harris’ Mustang teammates combined for only 13 points. The win was especially impressive as the Mustangs came into the contest with a 10-2 record.
The Skipjacks host Harford Community College on January 5th and Garrett College on January 8th.
