Chesapeake’s Delawter named all-American
Skipjacks’ first baseman selected for NJCAA third team

WYE MILLS, June 13 – Chesapeake College freshman Will Delawter wasn’t satisfied with his 2005 season. The voters for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Baseball All-America team thought otherwise.

Delawter, a first baseman with the Region XX and Northeast District champion Skipjacks, has been named to the 2005 NJCAA Division II All-American third team. Earlier, Delawter was named to the Northeast District and Region XX Division II first teams, and selected for the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference second team.

"Actually, I’m quite stunned," Delawter said of his reaction to being selected for the all-American squad. "I wasn’t totally satisfied with my performance this season – I wasn’t as productive down the stretch as I wanted to be. I definitely didn’t expect to be an all-American."

Delawter hit .387 with eight homers and 53 runs batted in while scoring 46 runs this season. While those numbers may not have satisfied Delawter, they certainly pleased Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski.

"Will had an excellent season," said Szymanski. "He was one of a number of guys who put up big numbers for us this season. Will worked extremely hard in the weight room, in off-season workouts, and throughout the season. Being named an all-American is an extremely impressive accomplishment, and Will deserves it."

Delawter hit .333 with a triple, three RBI, and five runs scored during Chesapeake’s three games in the Skipjacks’ first-ever NJCAA Division II World Series appearance. The Skipjacks (40-18) finished tied for fifth in the nation after going 1-2 in the World Series.

"Looking back, there wasn’t much more we could have done," said Delawter, whose Skipjacks went 8-3 in the postseason on the way to their first regional and district championships. "At the beginning of the year, there were no expectations around the league that we would win any championships. We had a great season."
