Skipjacks top BCCC in overtime, 90-89
Chesapeake improves to 6-1 with twin wins in Williams Classic
BALTIMORE, December 11 Jamarl Glen scored 20 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, as Chesapeake College’s men’s basketball team defeated host Baltimore City Community College, 90-89, Sunday night in the Ben Williams Classic.
Glen’s final two points broke an 86-86 tie. The Skipjacks (6-1) then forced a turnover and sealed the win on Chris Collins’ back-door layup with five seconds left in overtime.
Rob Lowery (eight rebounds, seven assists) and Chris Brown (10 rebounds) also scored 20 points apiece for the Skipjacks, who finished 2-0 in the weekend mixer. Chesapeake opened the Classic by routing Gateway (CN) Community College, 87-64, Saturday as Joe Fletcher came off the bench to score 29 points.
Chesapeake College head coach Dale Becraft was particularly pleased with Sunday’s win over BCCC, a region rival playing on its home court.
"Every win’s important, especially against a team that’s in our region," said Becraft. "Baltimore City played inspired ball and shot really well, but we didn’t fold. It was nice to see us close out a game like this, particularly after last Wednesday’s Catonsville game (an overtime loss in which the Skipjacks blew a 16-point lead)."
Becraft was also pleased with Chesapeake’s 16-for-21 effort at the foul line, particularly coming two games after a 4-for-10 effort in the loss to Catonsville.
"That’s at least one problem we seem to have solved," said Becraft.
Paul Frazier scored a game-high 31 points for Baltimore City. Eugene Graham added 18 points, Hubert Coleman scored 14, and John Addison contributed 10 for the Panthers.
Fletcher and Will Mills each scored nine points for the Skipjacks.
Lowery, Brown, and Fletcher each made the all-tournament team for the Skipjacks, who play Washington College’s junior varsity Tuesday night in Chestertown. Chesapeake then plays Friday and Saturday in the CCBC Holiday Tournament in Dundalk.
