Meet the Faculty - Lara Hollenczer
What drew you to the field of Communication studies?
As a student, I found out very quickly that the general field of communication was where I felt most comfortable, and was the most successful. Even though I was as nervous as anyone else in my freshman Introduction to Speech class, I was able to expand my communication skills through so many different disciplines such as journalism, sociology, English and business management. Luckily, that also meant that I was able to pursue multiple career paths including public relations practitioner, advertising and marketing executive, and communication director. There are so many different aspects to communication studies, yet the core concepts are so important for everyone to understand.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I strive to be active and engaging, and encourage lots of interaction in the classroom – this includes focusing on how we can apply communication concepts in real-life situations. And, as technology continues to change and redefine how we communicate with one another, I try to incorporate any new tools to keep the material fresh and relevant.
What's your favorite thing about teaching?
There are so many things that are rewarding and enjoyable about teaching, including that in this environment I am able to continue to learn everyday, that it is hard to narrow it down to just one. But one aspect I really enjoy the is the feedback from students whether it is a story about how a discussion in class helped in a specific situation, or a presentation made them feel more confident, or an activity really helped refine a new skill. That makes my day!
