Initiatives and Strategies

Initiative I:
Provide students with an engaging learning experience both within and beyond the classroom.

Strategies:

  1. Encourage active student participation in service learning, internships and other out of class experiences that reinforce the curriculum.
  2. Ensure that the General Education competencies, including critical thinking, communicating, interpreting numerical data, understanding the scientific method, and appreciating the nature and value of the fine and performing arts, are being taught and learned by students across the curriculum.
  3. Incorporate problem-solving, collaboration, research and technology learning opportunities into course work.
  4. Incorporate multicultural experiences and content into classes and in co-curricular activities.
  5. Implement an assessment program that validates a successful learning experience for all students.
  6. Provide learners with opportunities to enhance their civic engagement and ethical behavior.

Initiative II:
Ensure access and achievement for every student through innovative student-centered programs and services.

Strategies:

  1. Implement the Technology Plan in order to provide both access through distance learning (or other alternative delivery modes) and service to students through greater hands-on use of technology.
  2. Encourage resource development for scholarship assistance and for augmenting the operating budget.
  3. Align institutional programs and services with student and community needs through the Enrollment Management Plan.
  4. Enhance physical facilities and infrastructure that enable a “community of learners.”
  5. Provide a flexible learning environment in terms of course scheduling, location, and course delivery to enhance access and meet learner needs.
  6. Use strategies in the teaching-learning process that are interactive and responsive to the learning needs and styles of students while providing academic support services that complement these processes.
  7. Develop and support linkages with other educational providers to enhance access, program completion, and lifelong learning.
  8. Strengthen the developmental studies program to respond more effectively to individual student needs and goals.

Initiative III:
Develop an organization that promotes “a community of learners” and reflects its core values in everyday operations.

Strategies:

  1. Foster an environment where personal and professional learning by all employees is encouraged and valued.
  2. Encourage participatory decision-making based on shared information, ideas and values and improve overall communication recognizing all have a stake in the achievement of our shared vision.
  3. Increase the diversity of our college community and celebrate the value diversity brings.
  4. Promote opportunities for career growth and advancement for all employees based on acquired skills including leadership and responsibility.
  5. Assess operations in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness consistent with our core values.

Initiative IV:
Serve as a catalyst for regional economic, social, and cultural development.

Strategies:

  1. Respond to the changing needs of the community and region by providing relevant and extensive training opportunities.
  2. Encourage outreach, leadership, service, and involvement in the global community, demonstrating our core values.
  3. Provide leadership for regional infrastructure initiatives including transportation and telecommunications.
  4. Position the Todd Center for Performing Arts as the central focus for community cultural opportunities on the Eastern Shore and to reinforce the College curriculum in the arts and other disciplines.
  5. Promote activities that preserve and protect our cultural heritage.
  6. Increase opportunities for life-long learning expanding our “community of learners” throughout the region.
