INTRODUCTION

 


This tutorial will guide you through the process of preparing to write your research paper for Music 101. It is divided into 6 parts. You are expected to work through each part of the tutorial, and at the end of some sections you will be given an assignment that must be submitted to your instructor. You can enter the tutorial at the opening screen for each section by clicking part titles below or part titles in the menu at the top and bottom of this page (and all ensuing pages).

PART I. THE ASSIGNMENT

This module will outline the criteria for two different assignments.  To successfully complete this module you will be required to select an option and a topic.  You will be required to submit your topic to your instructor.


PART 2. LOCATING SOURCES

You will find databases and other resources to inform you on the issues that make up your subject.  To successfully complete this module you will need to use NoodleBib to develop a Working Bibliography which you will submit to your instructor.


PART 3. FROM TOPIC TO THESIS STATEMENT

As you locate sources on your topic,  you will need to develop a Working Thesis statement that will be the focus of your information gathering.  To successfully complete this module you will need to submit a Working Thesis statement to your instructor for approval.


PART 4. EVALUATING SOURCES TO DETERMINE APPROPRIATENESS FOR A RESEARCH PAPER

Applying evaluation criteria, you will judge whether the sources you have noted on your Working Bibliography are usable, reliable and appropriate for this assignment.


PART 5. GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE

Documenting sources in your paper helps to prevent plagiarism.  In this module, you will learn what is citing, why we cite and how we cite.


 PART 6.    THE WORK CITED PAGE        

In this module you will review MLA format for the Works Cited Page, how the parenthetical references in your paper and the Works Cited Page work together and how to take your Working Bibliography and turn it into a Works Cited Page.
