Part VI: From Idea to Research Question to Thesis Statement

I think I can write a thesis statement now. I started with the research question "Is alcoholism a disease?" Following my research on this topic I have developed a thesis statement with a slightly different slant.

A thesis statement unites my topic -- alcoholism -- and my point of view -- that a psychological approach to treatment is more valid than treating alcoholism as a disease.

A thesis statement is debatable -- not all readers will agree with it. I will take a stand and then support my opinion with evidence throughout the paper. I've found sources that discuss alcoholism from a psychological point of view (I called it a bad habit) and sources that discuss alcoholism as a disease, so I know I will able to support my idea, arguing in favor of alcoholism as a psychological issue rather than as a disease.

Here’s my thesis statement...

Alcoholism, often treated as a medical disease, might better be treated as a psychological dysfunction.

For further review in formulating a thesis statement, check out

Compose your thesis statement. Submit it to your instructor according to your instructor's directions.
