ESSAY 2 - Literature Review Essay

Frequently enough in your academic career, you will find that your research projects inevitably call for a “literature review,” that is, a brief summary of the scholarship out there regarding a particular topic.  A similar writing assignment would be the “annotated bibliography” but this writing, the annotated bibliography, would not go into as much depth as the literature review.  For our purposes here, you will review the scholarship you have collected for your research project and discuss its content and relevance to your project.  You could do this in one of two ways: 1. by resource (i.e., books, article, interview, etc.); 2. by theme (i.e., say your topic is alcoholism and you have resources dealing with addiction, recovery, sociological significance, etc.).  In either case, your essay will have the same format as we have been employing in this course so far.

Your introductory paragraph will have your thesis statement regarding the arguable point you want to make about the research under review here and its relationship to your topic. Following that, your introduction will articulate the supporting arguments for that thesis statement, providing the reader with a narrative outline of the essay to follow.  Remember: discuss in the body of your paper the supporting arguments in the order in which you list them in the introduction.  Then, in the body of your essay, discuss the scholarship, either piece by piece or by theme. Your conclusion then should summarize your points without repeating yourself word for word.

Note: The Writing Center at the University of North Carolina offers lots help with writing a literature review -- what a literature review is (and isn't), how to organize it, and tips on writing, which, among other things, advise you to highlight only the most significant aspects of each source you discuss and avoid using quotes. Learn from this UNC Writing Center website before you attempt this assignment.

Assignment: Submit your assignment to your instructor according to your instructor's directions.
