FILM 240

 

ASSIGNMENT

   The instructor requires two critiques of films seen outside the class.

 

 

OUTCOMES

  1. Students will  become familiar with LRC services

  2. Students will be introduced to information sources pertinent to assignment.

  3. Students will be introduced to evaluation standards for information.

  4. Students will introduced to MLA format and  methods to avoid plagiarism.

 

 

 

ACTIVITIES

Physical tour of Learning Resource Center- show Reference, Current periodicals, ASC, main collection , and Computer Lab.

 

  1. Provide instruction in searching ChesCat catalog discuss appropriate LC headings:go to an entry and show other subject headings to lead to other sources(broaden or narrow search subject )- check for videos as well as books.

  2. Check for FILM-REFERENCE and show several titles to the class and discuss their information- Chronicle of the Cinema, Magill’s Survey of Cinema, A Biographical Dictionary of Film, International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers, Encyclopedia of Novels into Film The World Encyclopedia of the Film, Horror Shows, etc.

  3. Make sure they search the catalog for videos and the general collection  in the LC heading PN 1997 ACRL Standard 1.1

  4. Show current periodicals we have in hard copy- ARTFORUM  has section of film reviews, Cinema Journal

  5. Take them to electronic databases and search Academic search elite and Proquest. .Lead them to Recommended websites  from homepage main menu and select FILM. Discuss evaluation of sources in library as well as online. ACRL 3.1-4

  6. Discuss searching with a search engine and the need for evaluation of sites generally mention the importance of site production, authorship, kept up to –date easy to navigate and search .ACRL Standard 2.1-5

  7. Generally mention the issue of plagiarism when dealing with criticism of films. .Make sure credit is given to author and use MLA format for works cited page to be included with critique. ACRL Standard 5
