MUS 101

 

The following outline is provided  for MUS 101 research project.

ASSIGNMENT

To write a research paper comparing and contrasting two composers( composers to be approved by instructor prior to this session) A work cited page will be required.

 

OUTCOMES

1.      Students will become acquainted with the LRC building – Library,  ASC, computer lab-tour of facilities

2.      Students will be introduced to information sources and services pertinent to this assignment

3.      Students will be introduced to evaluation standards for information sources

4.      Students will be introduced to MLA format for documentation and instructed in avoidance of plagiarism.

ACTIVITIES

1.      Tour of building noting services of Library, ASC and Computer Lab

A.     Reference section devoted to music explain LC classification

B.     Main collection – M classification area

C.    ASC- handout, drop-in, other services

D.    Computer lab- help with all word processing and media application.

2.      Return to L108 for introduction of sources –CHESCAT-

Encourage students to search for their composers, by name as subject or type of music, or MUSIC- time period . Help students to broaden or narrow search ACRL STANDARD 1.1

3.      Other searching strategies

A.     Online databases-Academic Search Elite and Proquest-discuss search terms, quotation marks, Boolean operators

B.     Introduce “Recommended websites” available by subject area-Music

C.    Discuss  internet search with search engine on web

4.      Discuss evaluation of sources based on PLADS as this is a research 

paper.  ACRL STANDARD  3.1-4

5.      Introduce MLA format found on left sidebar menu. Mention this 

electronic source as well as handout. Discuss ASC.

6.      Reminder of definition of plagiarism, when in doubt cite.
