Locating Appropriate Sources and APA Formatting

 

ASSIGNMENT

Students will be choosing and reading article from a web site or scholarly journal on a topic in psychology.  They will then write a critique of the article and create a works cited page using APA formatting.

 

 

OUTCOMES

1.     Students will become familiar with LRC information sources and services.

2.     Students will become familiar with techniques used to evaluate the appropriateness of a source.

3.     Students will become familiar with APA formatting.

4.     Students will be introduced NoodleBib and shown how to use it to create a Works Cited page.

 

ACTIVITIES

1.     Demonstrate how to locate articles in the Psychology Databases subscribed to by the Library.   ACRL Standard 1.1

2.     Demonstrate how to locate more articles using Google.  ACRLStandard 2.1-5

3.     Discuss evaluation techniques that need to be used to determine the appropriateness of the source.  ACRL Standard 3.1-4

4.     Show the students the Psychology links on the Recommended Web Sites page explaining why these sources are better suited for research purposes than general web sites found using search engines.  ACRL Standard 3.1-4

5.     Provide instruction on locating a journal article in Academic Search Elite with information obtained from an online journal abstract.  ACRL Standard 1.1

6.     Provide instruction on why sources need to be cited and how to do parenthetical citing.  ACRL Standard 5

7.     Demonstrate NoodleBib.  ACRL Standard 5

 

 

HANDOUTS  include database sheet, APA documentation, evaluation brochure, and plagiarism brochure

 

EVALUATION is based on instructor’s requirements.
