SDD One shot lesson,
Advanced Searching Techniques
ASSIGNMENT
This
is a group project. Each group will be given a research topic- examples are:
Note-taking
skills, test-taking skills, text-reading skills, memory or learning styles
Each
member of the group is responsible for finding one resource to be compiled into
a group
WorksCited page
using MLA format. This page may be presented to the class as a PowerPoint
presentation, handout, brochure, etc.
OUTCOMES
1.
Students will become familiar with LRC information sources and services.
2.
Students will be asked to describe problems they may have had with the
Library Skills test.
3.
Students will be introduced to search engines and directories. Search
strategies for both will be demonstrated.
4.
Students will have evaluation criteria defined and rationale for using
these information literacy skills.
5.
Students will be introduced to the definition of plagiarism and the ways
to avoid it.
ACTIVITIES
1.
Provide instruction in searching and browsing on the Chesapeake College
homepage:
Academic
calendar, faculty web pages, CRAB,
LRC homepage.
2.
Give quick tour of LRC homepage- ChesCat, left
hand sidebar menu with services.

Demonstrate electronic databases- explain choosing correct database to
search-
Proquest
- Education journals, ERIC and Academic Search Elite.
4.
Try “textbook reading and techniques” and
“textbook reading and methods”Help brain-
storm
other appropriate search terms. Reiterate the necessity for broadening or
narrowing
the scope of the project based on requirements
of the assignment. Discuss
evaluation
of resources with regard to PLADS. ACRL

Internet searching strategies may begin with: search by a URL, links, or
search engines
discuss
search engine vs. directory- Google offers both strategies. Point out importance
Of
evaluating websites ( apply PLADS) ask students to suggest others( easy to
navigate, graphics, does it include
a search box? has it been updated? By whom?
Share
tips with students- Google accepts up to10 words in search box, no need to link
terms with “and”. Use of * when
looking for term- three * mice will have hits of three blind mice, three blue
mice, three green mice. Nice to use
if you can’t remember a poem, saying , etc. ACRLStandard

Mention that group project is a compilation of each individual’s
source and must be
presented
in MLA format. Show our left sidebar menu with Sources for Assignment
and
locate MLA documentation. Introduce NoodleBib and explain its software. Discuss
plagiarism
