Using the LRC's Databases
The following instructions
are general guidelines for using the LRC's
subscription databases. In order to answer
complex questions or do more advanced searches,
please use the help feature or search tips within
the databases, or contact
one of our librarians. You will need to
obtain password information from the LRC in order to
access these databases. This must be done in
person or over the phone (you will be asked for your
Social Security Number to verify that you are a
Chesapeake College student).
Ebsco - Ebsco
is an online database which contains citations,
abstracts, and full-text articles from magazines,
newspapers, and journals. Ebsco allows you to
perform both keyword and natural language
searching. You can also search by publication
title. Type your keyword(s) into the
"Find" box and click on the search
button. Your results will be listed in
chronological order beginning with the most recent
article. The full-text articles are noted at
the bottom of the citation. Click on the title
of the article or on the Full-Text icon ( ) to see the
summary and/or article. You may print, save,
or email the article.
Proquest
- Proquest is an online database which contains
citations, abstracts, and full-text articles from
magazines, newspapers, and journals. Proquest
allows you to perform keyword as well as publication
title searches. To begin searching, choose a
database (we recommend using "All
Databases") and click
"Continue." Type your keyword(s)
into the space provided. Your results will be
listed in chronological order beginning with the
most recent article. To the left of the
citation, you will see any combination of the
following icons:

Click on any of the icons or on the title to access the
summary and/or article and/or pictures. You
may print, save, or email the article.
Galenet
- Galenet is a host of databases covering numerous
areas. The LRC subscribes to the Literature
Resource Center, an online database containing
biographical, bibliographical, critical, and
background information on authors and literature
from around the World. When you enter Galenet,
click on Literature Resource Center to begin
your search. You may search by author, title,
genre, literary movement/time period, literary
theme, and more. Click on the type of search
you would like to do, and type the author's name
(last name first), title, genre, or whatever
information is necessary for the type of search you
have chosen. You may be given of list of
choices (for example the name Richard Wright yields
six authors with that name); click on the name of
the person, book, etc. on which you need
information. You may then choose to look at
biographical, bibliographical or critical
information about this subject. You may also
be able to view a list of works by the author,
journal articles about the author or work, overviews
of the works, and/or Internet links on your
topic. You may print, save, or email the
articles.
The LRC will be adding many new
online databases in the coming year. Please
keep checking here for more information on how to
use these databases.
