I. Introduction

The Education Department at Chesapeake College subscribes to the belief that learners gain knowledge through personal experiences and refine this knowledge through dialogue and ongoing extensive reflection. The Education Department also believes that a working portfolio provides a platform to select, document, analyze and reflect on work completed and influenced within the requirements of a degree program.

Each person seeking an Associate of Arts Degree in Teaching must complete a portfolio as part of their degree requirements. The portfolio will serve as evidence for academic competence and ongoing professional growth for each specific degree program. Currently, Chesapeake College offers the following degree option:

Standards by which the portfolio will be developed and assessed are based on the Maryland State Department of Education Essential Dimensions of Teaching (EDOT), Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). These professional organizations provide essential information for excellence in teacher education.

Information will be distributed at the beginning of each semester during the Foundations of Education course as well as periodic seminars on campus. Each education course, as well as many core courses required for degree-seeking students, will support the ongoing progression and culmination for the portfolio guidelines. This booklet will provide the guidelines required for creating the portfolio.
