NoodleHelp for Databases

When you are citing an item you found in one of the Electronic Databases to which the library subscribes, NoodleBib asks a series of questions you may find difficult to answer.

Your first challenge is choosing a citation type from the <Select a citation type> drop-down. Databases most often contain journal, magazine and newspaper articles, and sometimes contain books and websites. The chart below shows which citation types are found in each database.

Another challenge may arise when you get to the section titled Information about online retrieval of this source. The answers are:

Information about online retrieval of this source

Is specific publication information (page numbers, date of publication, etc.) about an original printed version provided?

No, this is either an e-publication or specific information about a printed version is not given

Yes, information about a print publication is provided

Except when your source is a website, print publication information is usually provided.

Free or subscription content?

Free

Subscription database
Library or individual subscription to a database
(e.g., Opposing Viewpoints, CountryWatch, Encyclopaedia Britannica)

Periodical subscription
Subscription to an individual periodical (e.g.,
Time Online Edition, New York Times on the Web)

How can your reader find this source again?

Unique URL:
I have a URL that is a simple and persistent link to the content.

Search Page:
No unique URL. Material can be found using the Web site's own search page (not an external search engine like Google).

Path:
No unique URL. Material can be found by following a series of links (a path) starting from a unique URL (like the site's home page).

When you answer Subscription database above, this question will be grayed out -- you'll deal with the URL question later.

The Subscription Database Wizard asks you to name the database you used. Check the URL at the bottom of your printouts -- it may include the name of the database. Or use the chart below to help you remember -- it lists all the library subscription databases. If you enter a partial name in the Wizard, you'll be offered a list of database names to choose from.

The next challenge – What URL? In most cases, the Wizard's instructions will guide you. For those databases not found by the Wizard, choose Next. Choose Library Subscription Database and use the chart below to help with the URL.

Finally you’ll come to the screen where you can enter the standard information about the item you are citing – author, title, publication date, etc. Read the NoodleBib help on capitalization, names and numbers.
