Skipjacks headed to World Series

WYE MILLS, May 22 Two titles in two tournaments in two weekends.
If the Skipjacks make it three in a row, they will be national champions.
Nick Lemmer threw a five-hit, complete-game shutout as Chesapeake College’s baseball team routed visiting Monroe Community College, 9-0, Sunday afternoon in the deciding game of the best-of-three Northeast District title series. The district championship came a week after the Skipjacks overwhelmed Allegany College of Maryland, 11-0, to claim the Region XX crown.
"I still can’t believe it," said Chesapeake College head coach Frank Szymanski after his team qualified for the NJCAA Division II World Series for the first time. "I’m just so proud of these guys."
Chesapeake’s defense backed Lemmer (5-2) with three double plays while two home runs a three-run shot by Ryan Bell and a solo blast by Clarke Rollins provided more than enough offense.
Bell chased Monroe’s ace, Steve Derouin, with his fourth-inning homer, which gave Chesapeake a 4-0 lead. Jimmy Carroll and Justin Armiger each went 2-for-4 with run-scoring hits off Monroe relievers while Will Delawter stole home on the front end of a double steal to help break the game wide open.
The Skipjacks (39-16) start play in the double-elimination World Series Saturday.
Chesapeake and Monroe split an entertaining Saturday doubleheader to set up Sunday’s deciding game. Ryan Sullivan’s 10th-inning single scored Nelson Santos with Game 2’s winning run in Monroe’s 7-6 triumph after Chesapeake hung on for a 7-4 win in Game 1.
Armiger, Anthony Archie, and Chad Wolfe each hit two-run homers, and Skipjacks ace Bryan Brainer pitched a gritty, 11-hit complete game in Chesapeake’s Game 1 win. The Skipjacks then battled back from a 4-0, seventh-inning deficit to twice tie Game 2 before Monroe’s 10th-inning rally forced Sunday’s showdown to decide the Northeast District representative in the World Series.
