Wednesday, January 25, 2006
TAKOMA PARK They´re at it again.
Nakia Elliott and Keena Hawkins combined for 12 three-pointers in last Saturday´s 73-59 loss to Garrett College, including a school-record eight by Elliott. The pair split 10 more three-pointers and combined for 44 points Tuesday night as the Chesapeake College women´s basketball team defeated winless Montgomery College/Takoma Park, 70-48.
Elliott finished with a game-high 23 points and Hawkins added 21.
"They´re hitting open shots. That´s the name of the game," said Chesapeake head coach Lowell Shaw, whose team improved to 5-11.
While Elliott and Hawkins were scoring from the outside, Lynn Rose was dominating the inside. Rose scored 16 points and pulled down a school-record 31 rebounds. She missed a triple-double by three assists, finishing with seven.
"The numbers speak for themselves," said Shaw, referring to Rose´s big night inside.
Skipjack Sherrie Thomas nearly produced a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Caitlin Donnelly, a recent addition to the team, chipped in with six rebounds.
Ashley Anthony scored 21 points to lead host Takoma Park, which fell to 0-14. Sherri Monroe added 18 points.
Chesapeake, which led by 20 points in the first half, saw its lead shrink to 38-26 at intermission. Shaw said a switch back to a man-to-man defense helped the Skipjacks take control in the second half.
