Chesapeake College plans day for 'celebrating our graduates'

Posted on Monday, March 13, 2006

WYE MILLS – The premise is simple enough.

"Graduates´ Day is really just an opportunity for celebrating our graduates and offering them some services they may want to access before leaving us," said Chesapeake College Registrar Claudia Jewell, who proposed the idea for the Chesapeake College Graduates´ Day scheduled for April 6.

Jewell said she appropriated the idea for Graduates´ Day from a colleague.

"Like so many great ideas . . . I don´t want to say I stole it, but I patterned it after a similar day Cecil Community College holds for its graduates," said Jewell.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5-6:30 p.m. on Chesapeake College´s main campus in Wye Mills. Graduates will be treated to a free cookout, receive their commencement announcements, and have the opportunity to meet with Chesapeake College offices involved in career planning, transfer advising, alumni affairs, and financial aid along with representatives from some student organizations including the PTK international honor society.

In addition, Northeast Photo will be on hand to take any special graduation photos – with friends, faculty members, etc. – students wish to take in caps and gowns. The Chesapeake College Bookstore will also take cap-and-gown measurements as part of the day´s activities and will be offering college memorabilia and special clothing for graduates.

"We´re very excited about this event," said Dr. Richard Midcap, the college´s vice president for student success and enrollment services. "We love to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, and we think our graduates are going to benefit from all the services that will be available."

Graduation candidates do not need to RSVP, according to Jewell – they just need to "show up and enjoy the day."
