Posted on Tuesday, April 04, 2006
WYE MILLS Hundreds of area high school students are expected to attend Chesapeake College´s campus-wide open house on Thursday, April 27. A full slate of activities is scheduled for the event, which will run from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Although the primary audience for this event is the Mid-Shore´s high school student population, community residents of all ages are welcome to attend.
"We´ve planned an exciting day with a wide range of activities that should appeal to high school students and others who would like to learn more about Chesapeake College, its programs of study and services," said Dean for Recruitment Services Kathy Petrichenko. "Our goal is to share information about the college, the Dual Enrollment program for high school students, career and transfer programs, financial aid and scholarships, career and college major decision making, and much more."
More than 250 high school students from the five counties will be bussed to Chesapeake College for the event. Chesapeake College President Stuart M. Bounds will welcome the high school students in the Todd Performing Arts Center when they first arrive.
Visitors will participate in breakout sessions on a variety of topics including the college admissions and registration process, the Dual Enrollment Program, course offerings for the Summer and Fall 2006 semesters, financial aid and scholarships, and transfer programs of study. The Open House line up also includes a faculty and student panel presentation, which will focus on career majors, educational requirements for specific careers, transferable majors, and the academic goals and experiences of various students. Chesapeake College´s Dual Enrollment Program, which is a special program that allows high school juniors and seniors, with cumulative GPA´s of 2.5 or higher, to take college courses at discounted tuition, will be marketed to the attendees. Courses taken through this program are transferable to colleges both in-state and out-of-state. Participants will also be given an opportunity to tour the campus.
High school attendees who participate in the planned breakout sessions will be entered in a prize drawing. The prizes include summer and fall tuition to Chesapeake, an i-Pod, CD stereo system, gift cards, and many other items.
Guests can enjoy an outdoor concert at lunchtime.
The college will be providing bus transportation to interested sophomores, juniors, and seniors who attend one of the Mid-Shore´s public high schools. Students who would like to sign up for the Open House trip are asked to contact their high school guidance counselors for more information. Home-schooled students and students who attend private high schools are also invited to attend the Open House.
