Monette Malabet´s two free throws with five seconds left gave the Chesapeake College women´s basketball team a 22-20 halftime lead over visiting Montgomery College Takoma Park Wednesday night. Who knew those foul shots would be the start of a 40-9, game-ending run in the Skipjacks´ 60-29 romp?
"We missed a lot of shots that were rolling off the rim in the first half," said Chesapeake head coach Lowell Shaw. "Our shots started dropping in the second half and we were in better shape than they were."
Chesapeake (3-7) started the second half with a full-court press that helped the Skipjacks build a 34-23 cushion. Falcon Ashley Anthony stopped that run with a jumper, but Chesapeake simply responded with a 15-0 scoring spree that effectively iced the game.
"The difference in the second half was we ran out of energy and focus," said Takoma Park head coach LaMonte Wyche, Sr. after his team was held to nine second-half points. "I thought their press was more token than anything, but it was a good strategy by their coach because it disrupted our offense."
Caroline Holly (four points) started the 15-0 run with a jumper that yielded her first two points of the season, then came right back with a fast-break layup.
"It was exciting," said Holly, who had never played organized basketball before this season, about getting into the scoring column. "We were more into the game in the second half and played as a team."
Two layups by Chanae DeShields (game-high 17 points) made it 42-25, and Malabet (nine points) turned a weak-side rebound into a three-point play that gave the Skipjacks a 20-point cushion. Sherrie Thomas (11 points) and Yaasmiyn Finlayson (11 points) added layups to complete the run.
Anitra Cannon had eight points for the Skipjacks. Elicia Davis led Takoma Park (2-7) with 12 points.
