Dajani leads Skipjacks to season-opening victory
Posted on Tuesday, September 08, 2009
ARNOLD Freshman midfielder Mohamad Dajani scored three goals and assisted on the fourth Tuesday afternoon as the Skipjacks used four second-half goals to beat Anne Arundel Community College, 4-2, and make a dramatic break with the program’s rather bleak recent past.
"This is a darn-near historic win," said first-year head coach Mike Moulton, who took over a program that posted a 0-13 record last fall and has had only two winning seasons since 1993. "There were a lot of nerves in the first half, but we made some adjustments in the second half that paid off."
Dajani, a Cambridge-South Dorchester High graduate, broke a scoreless tie early in the second half with an unassisted goal and then set up Kyle Simpson’s goal that gave the Skipjacks a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers twice cut Chesapeake’s lead to a single goal, but both times Dajani answered with scores to restore the Skipjacks’ two-goal advantage.
Michael Turner also had an assist for the Skipjacks.
David Hickman, who shut out the Pioneers in the first half, and Jordan Durner each came up with four saves while playing a half in goal for the Skipjacks.
"David and Jordan both played well and our defense was really outstanding," said Moulton.
The Skipjacks are off until next Tuesday when they host Frederick Community College in the first of four straight home games.
