Skipjacks sweep Garrett to end volleyball skid
Posted on Monday, September 28, 2009
WYE MILLS Jay Covey could tell his Skipjacks were getting better, and Saturday´s women´s volleyball sweep of Garrett College provided concrete evidence of their improvement.
Chesapeake College downed the visiting Lakers, 25-12, 27-25, and 25-22, to snap a five-match losing streak. The Skipjacks (2-9 overall, 1-3 league) earned their first Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference victory with the sweep against winless Garrett (0-7, 0-5).
"A win always helps," said Covey. "I think the girls realize there are matches we should win and there are matches where the teams are better than us. Right now, though, any win is a positive, and we´re getting better."
O´Sha Adams had a team-high 12 kills and also served four aces in the Garrett win. Lexi Holder (seven kills, 11 aces) and Meridith Farnell (five kills, six aces) also had key roles in an offense that was set up by Sarah Porter (22 set assists).
"We´re starting to get some offense," noted Covey.
Earlier Saturday, the Skipjacks had plenty of offense but too many errors in a 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, and 27-25 loss to Cecil College. Adams (20 kills, seven aces), Holder (12 kills, 10 aces) and Porter (30 set assists) put up big numbers, but the team also committed 23 service errors.
"If we had just served as well as we normally serve, we would have been all right," Covey said of the Cecil contest.
The Skipjacks travel to the College of Southern Maryland Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
