Adult Education instructor Arnetta Freeman congratulates two of her students, Dezirae Harrison and Cheri-Anne Marshall, during the recent Adult Graduation Program at Chesapeake College.

WYE MILLS – Keynote speaker Ed Silver advised the 53 graduates of Chesapeake College’s Adult Education Program on June 4 to keep taking small steps.

"That first small step can be the beginning of a great journey," Silver, a career educator and supervisor of Kent County Public Schools, told the graduates.

The diploma recipients ranged in age from their teens into their 50s. Chesapeake’s program has teachers in a variety of locations in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot and Wicomico counties.

Graduate Rosa Barrilas of Ridgley had to work through the English as a Second Language program before she could earn her high school diploma. The next step, she said, is finishing Chesapeake’s Certified Nursing Assistant Program.

"I wanted to do this because doors open when you get a diploma," Barrilas said, adding that now she has earned her diploma, her supervisor has offered to pay for her CNA classes.

Many graduates said they returned to school to improve their job opportunities or to set good examples for their children. Many also have future education goals such as obtaining occupational certification or eventually earning a master’s degrees.

"I just wanted to prove that you can teach an old dog new tricks," said Harry "Chuckie" White, a 54-year-old boat captain from Rock Hall.
