Academic Planning
Why should you complete an Academic Plan?
There are many advantages to developing a long-term Academic Plan. A long-term Academic Plan can:
- Save you time. Some required courses are offered infrequently. By developing a long-term Academic Plan, you can make sure you're ready to take these courses when they are offered.
- Save you money. Academic planning allows you to look ahead toward your Chesapeake graduation and/or transfer to a four-year institution. Careful planning will ensure you are taking the quickest route to graduation, and/or taking the courses the college you are transferring to wants taken at the community college level.
- Offer added convenience. Once you have an academic plan on file, you only need to see an advisor if you need to make changes to the plan. Otherwise, you're eligible for Express Registration, which can significantly shorten the registration process for you each semester.
When should you complete an Academic Plan?
"Academic planning" and "scheduling classes" are two different, but related, functions. Real academic planning should take place away from the hustle and bustle of scheduling your upcoming semester's courses. You should make an appointment to see your faculty advisor or a Student Success advisor at a time when you can carefully review your academic and career goals. Don't rush through this process -- after all, a good academic plan is expected to last through your entire Chesapeake College academic career, unless your situation or circumstances change.
