College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Chesapeake College administers CLEP (College Level Examination Program) examinations for students who wish to receive course credit at Chesapeake College or another institution. CLEP Exams are given with at least 48-hour prior notice on Monday-Friday, except holidays when the college is closed. *The CLEP Exam is taken on a computer, and each applicant pays either with a credit card or bankcard, a fee of $65 directly to CLEP. This fee will be $70 beginning July 1, 2008.The Testing Center charges a $15 fee for administering the test and this must be paid prior to or on the scheduled day of the exam at the college Business Office, which is located in the Dorchester Building. The receipt showing payment of this fee is required before starting the exam.

Total cost for each test:
CLEP *$70 for each test, paid with a credit card at time of testing.
$15 administrative fee paid prior to testing at the Business Office.

*Please note: The CLEP fee will increase to $72 beginning on July 1, 2009

If the test is taken when the Business Office is closed, the administrative fee will be collected by the Testing Administrator at time of testing.

Guidelines For Obtaining CLEP Credit From Chesapeake College

  1. No more than one-half of the number of credits normally required for graduation may be earned by satisfactorily passing approved examinations.
  2. CLEP students must have score reports sent directly from the College Level Examination Program to the Office of Registration.
  3. Applicant test scores will be reviewed to determine whether credit will be granted.
  4. No CLEP credit will be posted on any student's transcripts before his/her completion of at least 15 credit hours of study at Chesapeake with an overall grade average of 2.00.
  5. Credit for the CLEP examinations will be granted for scores at the 50th percentile, and above, of the combined national men-women sophomore norms.
  6. Chesapeake College can only offer CLEP credit for examinations, which parallel courses found in the College's current catalog. A current list of CLEP examinations for which Chesapeake College will grant credit is below.
  7. Students who have previously attempted a course at any accredited institution of higher education may not apply for CLEP or Credit by Examination for that course.

Procedure for Obtaining CLEP Credit from Other Institutions

Policies regarding acceptability and scoring of CLEP exams vary among institutions. If you wish to receive CLEP credit from an institution other than Chesapeake College, you must abide by the other institution's guidelines. You may, however, take CLEP exams at Chesapeake College for reporting to other institutions.
