Chesapeake named in community award

Chesapeake College and its Director of Capital Projects Coordinator, Miriam Collins, recently received the ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program Eastern Shore Board Member award for 2015.

In March, Collins accepted the award at the 11th annual ACE awards ceremony for Talbot County.

“Working in the ACE program has been so rewarding,’ Collins said. “I wish that there had been something like the ACE program when I was in high school. It’s a great way for high school students to explore career options before they get to college. They can supplement what they learn in the classroom with what they learn by working with local industry representatives.”

Collins, who oversees construction projects at the college, joined ACE as a mentor this year. She worked with students at St. Michaels High School and helped guide the group’s activities this academic year.  For the major project this year, the students designed a health clinic for St. Michaels.  Activities also included a field trip to Chesapeake’s Wye Mills campus, where students toured the Health Professions and Athletics Center project.

“Chesapeake wants to promote education and career preparation at every level,” said Vice President for Administrative Services Tim Jones. “Miriam, with her knowledge and experience, is the ideal mentor in a program like ACE.  She plays a critical role on our campus, and has much to share with these students.”
