WYE MILLS – Longtime and admired Chesapeake College professor, Lewis Jerome “Jerry” Healy, passed away this month at his home in Clayton, DE.
An educator at Chesapeake for 42 years, Mr. Healy, 75, retired as a professor in 2015. With his energetic lectures and commitment to student success, Mr. Healy was a campus favorite who taught multiple generations of Chesapeake students.
A businessman and U.S. military veteran, Mr. Healy taught in the Business Program at Chesapeake. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Baltimore and later earned a master’s degree at George Washington University. He was a special arbitrator for the Security and Exchange Commission.
With his immaculate suits and perfect neckties, Mr. Healy brought a touch of Madison Avenue to Wye Mills during his tenure. Lines formed for his weekly office hours and it was well-known that Mr. Healy would continue answering students’ questions long after the conclusion of class time. He organized annual student trips to New York City that combined a visit to the New York Stock Exchange with touring the city’s best-known landmarks.
Also a dedicated off-campus advocate for Chesapeake, Mr. Healy encouraged his business contacts in the private sector to donate resources to the college. Twice Mr. Healy served as Faculty Marshal at Chesapeake and was selected by students as Faculty Member of the Year in 2010.
He is survived by his children, Juliet Marie Healy and her husband Ian Yesilonis of Catonsville, MD, Lewis J. Healy, III of Dover and Shannon Dorothy Healy of St. Louis, MO; brother, David Alan Healy and his wife Connie of Perry Hall, MD; sister, Peggy Marie Buckless and her husband Dennis of Perry Hall, MD; grandchildren, Kylan and Finn Yesilonis, two aunts and many loving cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in memory of Jerry Healy to St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church at 426 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or to the College Scholarship Fund at Chesapeake College, P.O. Box 8, Wye Mills, MD 21679.
