Over 20 months ago, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unanticipated shift to virtual learning—nearly overnight. This abrupt change was incredibly difficult for many of our students. Reliable internet access is a hurdle in our region, and most of our students learn best when taught face-to-face. In addition, students took on more responsibilities at home, whether helping their children (or younger siblings) who were also learning virtually or picking up extra shifts at work to assist with household expenses. Unfortunately, it also meant the loss of household income, significant mental health challenges, and childcare shortages for many.
During this time, our students have demonstrated persistence, determination, and grit in order to reach their goals.
STUDENT PERSISTENCE LEADS TO SUCCESS
Jade Pearl, 2021 Chesapeake College Graduate and Scholarship Recipient
A North Caroline High School graduate, Jade was a frontline retail worker during the pandemic in 2020 as she managed a full academic course load. She also worked in the TRiO program at Chesapeake as a technology and IT tutor. She used her tech savvy to help students navigate remote learning amid the stresses of a global pandemic.
"I really enjoyed helping my classmates. I grew more confident as I helped other students. I learned that I can make a difference. I was inspired at Chesapeake and learned how to be the best version of myself. I was so grateful to be in such a supportive environment and that the College provided me with so many opportunities."
Susanna Wynne, Chesapeake College Skilled Trades Student and Welder
Susanna was following a pre-engineering track in high school. She wasn't excited, though, about the timeline for a bachelor's degree.
Following high school graduation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Susanna enrolled at Chesapeake in October 2020 to prepare for a career in the Skilled Trades. She is the first person in her family to attend college. Susanna said the small classes and strong foundational instruction at Chesapeake are preparing her for a well-paying career in the trades. In fact, the skills Susanna has already acquired led to full-time job at Mid-Atlantic Waste Systems.
"I know that my trades education will never lose value. You can go anywhere with these skills and have many opportunities."
Nursing Program Excels
In FY21, our Nursing students had a 100% pass rate for the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). This was the highest pass rate in our nursing program history and the highest of all Maryland colleges and universities in FY21.

The Chesapeake College Foundation helps Chesapeake College students through scholarship support - enabling students to change their lives by earning their degree or certificate, continuing to a 4-year college/university, entering the workforce, or advancing in their careers. Our alums bring their passion for their education and work into our community each day, helping us all thrive.
The Foundation also helps Chesapeake College with support for teaching and learning to ensure that the College continues to provide meaningful face-to-face and online educational programming for transfer programming, workforce development and continuing education to meet the needs and expectations of our students and our region.
"If we as advocates can help provide an opportunity for someone to improve themselves, to upgrade themselves, it's just the right thing to do."
