Chesapeake College received a five-year TRiO Student Support Services-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) federal grant to provide a full range of college success supports to disadvantaged students. We have been funded in the amount of $220,000 per year to serve 120 students each academic year.
In the first year of the TRiO STEM grant, with new staff on board, we successfully achieved of our annual grant Objectives through STEM focused intrusive academic advising, financial aid advising, financial and economic literacy education, career counseling and planning, individualized counseling and coaching, high-impact professional and peer tutoring, and cultural and educational enrichment activities.
Working in collaboration with several on and off-campus programs and colleagues, our new STEM grant enables Chesapeake College to maintain, improve, and expand our current levels of support services for disadvantaged students interested in STEM careers. TRiO STEM is currently in process of developing several key innovative activities to reflect the growing academic and personal needs of our TRiO students: 1) A Learning Community; 2) A Textbook Lending Program; 3) An Annual Leadership Development Conference.
New staff include Kristin Shearon, Academic Coordinator.
