VETERINARY ASSISTANT
VETERINARY ASSISTANT TRAINING
Learn skills to work in the animal care field. As trained Veterinary Assistants, students will support vet technicians and vets in a variety of inpatient and outpatient activities. The program consists of four noncredit courses that include supervised clinical practicum hours completed outside of the classroom. Certificate of completion awarded for successful completion of the program. Prior approval from program coordinator required to register. Students will register for all sections in the course at one time (Vet I, II, III, and IV).
PREREQUISITES: College Placement Test for Reading Comprehension and Arithmetic, High School (or equivalent) Graduate, Medical Terminology: A Word Association Approach, 18 years of age. Computer with webcam and strong internet connection required for successful completion.
COURSE SEQUENCE: Veterinary Assistant Training I, Veterinary Assistant Training II, Veterinary Assistant Training III, Veterinary Assistant Training IV
Course fee: $1,100 (Tuition: In-county $60, Out-of-county $65, Out-of-state $70)

Veterinary Assistant Training uses live animals for teaching purposes. Chesapeake College takes all necessary safety precautions when students interact with live animals, however, the potential exists for students to be bitten, scratched or injured by an animal while participating in this training. Chesapeake College makes no representation concerning any animal’s exposure to rabies or other diseases and does not provide medical insurance or worker’s compensation for any injuries suffered while participating in this program. Students are required to show proof of medical insurance.

VETERINARY ASSISTANT I
Prepare for a career in veterinary medicine. Learn about front desk and exam room procedures for veterinary assistants. Topics include overview of the field of veterinary science, office procedures, client relations, medical terminology, animal handling and restraint, and exam room procedures. Clinical shirt and clinical book are included.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: VETERINARY ASSISTANT
Dr. Katelin McConkey received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2010, then graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. She lives on the Eastern Shore with her husband, newborn baby girl, three horses, three dogs, and two cats. Her interests in veterinary medicine are surgery, dentistry, ultrasonography, emergency care, and exotic animal care. Outside of work, she likes to ride and drive her horses and travel with her family. She is the Medical Director of VCA Choptank Animal Hospital. She also works at and is a part owner of the Delmarva Animal Emergency Center. This is her fourth year teaching the Chesapeake College Veterinary Assistant course.
