Clinical Nursing Instructor – Medical-Surgical Nursing

The Clinical Nursing Instructor provides hands-on clinical instruction and supervision to undergraduate nursing students in the medical-surgical setting and college simulation center. The instructor fosters the development of clinical judgment, technical competence, and professional behaviors consistent with program outcomes and standards of nursing practice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide clinical instruction and supervision of nursing students in acute medical-surgical care environments.
  • Participate in simulation teaching as needed to reinforce medical-surgical competencies/concepts.
  • Demonstrate and supervise safe, evidence-based nursing practice in areas such as patient assessment, medication administration, wound management, IV therapy, and postoperative care.
  • Facilitate student learning through pre- and post-conferences, reflective discussions, and clinical debriefing sessions.
  • Observe, coach, and evaluate students’ clinical performance using established rubrics and learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student performance, provide ongoing feedback, and maintain accurate documentation of clinical progress.
  • Collaborate with course coordinators to ensure clinical learning experiences align with course objectives and program outcomes.
  • Serve as a professional role model and mentor, promoting clinical reasoning, patient-centered care, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • Maintain compliance with program, college, and clinical site policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a liaison between the nursing program and clinical site, fostering positive professional relationships.
  • Participate in orientation sessions, and ongoing professional development activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred; BSN with significant clinical experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of recent clinical experience in medical-surgical nursing.
  • Prior teaching or clinical preceptor experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to student success and the mission of nursing education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift and move up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
  • Must possess sufficient stamina and mental stability to fulfill the customary requirements of the profession.
  • Perform fine movements and be able to manipulate instruments and equipment.
  • Have auditory ability sufficient to teach assessment of client health care needs.
  • Have visual ability sufficient to teach assessment of client health care needs.
