Description

The primary role of the TRIO Upward Bound Instructor is to provide academic support for Upward Bound students during the summer academy on campus at Chesapeake College.

UB Instructors have a profound effect on program participants because of the time that is spent with students during the program.

Prepare and teach a lesson plan on the specific topic.
Work with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.
Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills, and approaches to answering test questions.
Demonstrating academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
Providing students with positive and constructive feedback
Offering feedback on progress to students’ parents and Upward Bound staff where appropriate.
Building meaningful connections with students from diverse, underserved backgrounds.
Diagnosing student needs through active listening techniques and questioning strategies.
Entering of data and contacts in to program database BLUMEN on a consistent basis for programmatic recordkeeping and reporting.

Requirements

The successful candidate has the following qualifications:

Master’s Degree from an accredited college/university or State Teacher/School Official Certification.
Demonstrated ability for rapport and empathy with the concerns, needs, and issues of UB-eligible students and their parents
Demonstrated experience with program development.
Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to foster positive relationships with Upward Bound staff, students, and high school personnel.
Strong written communication skills.
Commitment to a collaborative, team-working environment.
Computer savvy with experience in MS Office software.

The TRIO Upward Bound employment opportunity will last from July 10, 2023 – August 18,
2023. The candidate will be required to work approximately 5 hours per day, Monday – Thursday
between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm for approximately six weeks. Individual employment
schedules will be arranged at the time of hire.

This is a paid part-time temporary position with an average of no more than 20 hours per week at $27.00 per hour.
