Chesapeake College this month celebrated the newest members inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. The new inductees included baseball player Mike Kelch, the 2007-08 men’s basketball team and the 2010 women’s softball team.

Kelch led the 2005 Skipjacks to Region XX and Northeast District titles, and eventually to a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA division II World Series. He went on to play at Division I Temple University. The 2007-2008 men’s basketball team, coached by John Mappas, claimed the first men’s basketball region title in Chesapeake’s history. The 2010 women’s softball team, coached by Durrie Hayes, won the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference title.

The evening also included two surprises, when Mappas and Dr. Richard Midcap, the vice president for student success and enrollment services, were also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Mappas, basketball head coach for seven years, led the 07-08 team to their success. Midcap started the college’s sports information bureau and helped create the college’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

“This is one of my favorite annual events. Here we can recognize the contributions that our athletics programs, coaches and student athletes make to the college,” said Chesapeake President Barbara Viniar.
