Skipjacks Bring Momentum into New Season

WYE MILLS - Anyone thinking the Chesapeake men’s basketball team will show signs of decline after going 23-3 – the second most victories in school history – may be proven wrong or in for a surprise.

The Skipjacks’ leading scorer and point guard Mahzi Thames (Virginia Union University) departed along with two other starters, sharpshooter Craig Turner (Point Park University) and guard Jalen White, and sixth man Jalen Freeman.

Chesapeake Men’s Basketball Coach Andrew Sachs, however, is not rebuilding, just reloading.

Chesapeake Rates High Among U.S. Community Colleges

Chesapeake College ranked in the top fourth nationally of community colleges in a recent survey.

The survey, conducted by WalletHub, rated the colleges on 19 indicators of cost and quality. Chesapeake ranked 110 out of 667 community colleges. Of Maryland’s community colleges, Montgomery College rated highest in the national survey at 7th place.

Building a Career in Gaming

Alum Jacob Wheatley is combining his preparation at Chesapeake with his love of video games to build a career in the gaming industry. While a student at Chesapeake, Jacob was active in the Theatre Program. He later transferred to Full Sail University in Florida for a bachelor's degree in game design.

Now, this St. Michaels native is living in Seattle and working for Nintendo, where he designs and troubleshoots new products.

The alum credits Chesapeake classes in theatre and communications with giving him learning opportunities and critical skills.

Volleyball Season Opens with Team Chemistry, Potential

If the Chesapeake College volleyball season could be judged solely on paper, so much would look so promising.

The Skipjacks return five standout sophomores and they’re joined by a batch of blossoming freshmen.

It could all add up to a breakthrough season for Chesapeake if the team plays up to its potential.

A .500 record might just feel like a championship year to the players and fifth-year coach Emily George considering the Skipjacks' best season since 2015 was 5-12. There are also two winless seasons during that stretch.

Regional Job Fair to Connect Businesses with Potential Employees

More than 80 employers expected to meet prospects at Chesapeake College event

WYE MILLS - Employers hoping to build their ranks will gather at Chesapeake College for a regional job fair on Tuesday, October 4 from 3 to 7 pm in the Health Professions and Athletics Center.

This free event will feature more than 80 regional employers interested in filling vacant positions. Businesses that have already signed on for the fair include Paul Reed Smith Guitars, Dixon Valve, Hyatt Regency, Choptank Electric Cooperative and University of Maryland Medical System.

Chesapeake College Awarded National Science Foundation Grant

WYE MILLS - The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded Chesapeake College a $317,000 grant to recruit and retain students in computer technology programs. Chesapeake’s program prepares technicians for IT industry employment.

The NSF grant for Chesapeake’s “Preparing Career Ready Information Technology Technicians” proposal is a three-year award.

With the grant, Chesapeake will help build a more diverse, career-ready skilled technical workforce for the rural Eastern Shore.

Chesapeake Vice President Named to Maryland Education Blueprint Committee

WYE MILLS - Dr. David Harper, Chesapeake’s Vice President for Workforce and Academic Programs, was recently appointed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Accountability and Implementation Board’s (AIB) new advisory committee.

The AIB established four advisory committees to provide additional input and feedback on Blueprint implementation from across the State. The AIB seeks to involve stakeholders and members of the public from diverse geographic, economic, racial, ethnic, cultural, and gender backgrounds who represent various life experiences and viewpoints.

Johnson Brings Trades, Preservation Expertise to Foundation Board

WYE MILLS - Darius Johnson, a Kent County native and current Talbot County resident, is the newest member of the Chesapeake College Foundation Board.

Mr. Johnson is the Northeast Regional Director for the ACE Mentor Program of America, an award-winning, afterschool program designed to attract high school students into pursuing careers in the Architecture, Construction and Engineering industry, including skilled trades.

WYE MILLS – Three hundred seventy-nine students were named to the Chesapeake College Dean's List for Spring Semester 2022. The following students earned a quality point average of 3.50 or better on at least seven credit hours:
