Students face a variety of challenges as they work to achieve their goals. For first-generation students at Chesapeake College, the TRIO Students Support Services Program provides the resources to help.

Each year more than 300 students enroll in the TRIO program, according to Director Ismana Carney. Nineteen TRIO students graduated with the Class of 2016, including Lyndy Mothershead, winner of the 2016 John T. Harrison Award.

The federally-funded program is designed to help students stay in school to either graduate or transfer for a four-year institution.  Each year, 80 percent of Chesapeake’s TRIO students maintain good academic standing.

Services include one-on-one weekly tutoring sessions, academic advising, transfer/career planning, registration assistance, study coaching and cultural opportunities.

To qualify for the program, students must have a high school diploma and meet one of the following requirements: first generation student, low income or have a disability.
