Chesapeake College is committed to maintaining a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our Department of Public Safety provides professional support, campus patrols, and emergency response services at both the Wye Mills campus and the Cambridge Center. Here’s how you can reach us and what to know in case of an emergency.

About Public Safety

The Chesapeake College Department of Public Safety is dedicated to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our certified officers are trained in emergency response, including CPR, AED, and Narcan administration, and are authorized by the State of Maryland to conduct criminal investigations and provide on-site assistance. Working closely with local law enforcement and emergency services, Public Safety officers offer campus patrols, immediate response to incidents, and a range of support services across both the Wye Mills and Cambridge Center campuses, ensuring the well-being of our college community at all times.

Emergency Prevention

The College has security cameras strategically located inside and outside of the buildings, which are monitored by Public Safety.

Keep yourself and your property safe by practicing these safety tips:

  • Use the buddy system and walk with a friend to your car, or contact a Campus Police Officer to escort you to your car.
  • Have your key ready as you walk to your car.
  • Look around, under and inside your car before you unlock it.
  • After entering, lock the doors immediately.
  • Never open your door to strangers.
  • Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers.
  • Be aware of the people around you.
  • Lock valuables in your trunk.
  • Always remove the keys from your vehicle and lock the doors when it is unattended.

Do not leave valuable articles unattended. Keep possessions with you and within your sight at all times. Keep your car doors locked and your valuables out of sight or stored in the trunk of your vehicle.

If a theft occurs, notify Campus Police by calling *9 or 410-758-2525 as soon as possible.

Campus Police Officers are on campus whenever the College is open. You may request a security escort to your vehicle by contacting Public Safety at 410-758-2525.

The Chesapeake College Emergency Procedures Guide is printed annually and is available to all employees and students through MyCampus. It is intended for the use of faculty, staff, and students of Chesapeake College specifically to provide information on how to respond to possible emergency conditions on campus. It covers such areas as bomb threats, chemical spills, crimes, serious injuries or illnesses and fires.

Recipients of this Manual are requested to become familiar with its contents. In the event of an emergency, it serves as a quick reference for effective action. Chesapeake College encourages employees to keep the Manual in an easily accessible location at all times, preferably beside the telephone. New employees are made familiar with it as part of their orientation program.

Additionally, the Chesapeake College Student Handbook and Academic Calendar, available via Chesapeake College’s website and the Chesapeake College app, include information on reporting of crimes and emergency contact numbers.

New employees are given brochures at their orientation informing them of the Department of Public Safety duties and responsibilities, and students have access to information on safety awareness through the Chesapeake College website. Safety awareness messages are sent through various notification systems advising the campus community of safety tips and safety awareness issues.

Safety awareness recommendations are stated in college publications and on the college web site under safety and security. The purpose of the recommendations is to advise the campus community of safety tips and safety awareness issues.

Crime prevention tips along with timely notifications are sent to the campus community after reports of criminal activity are received by the Department of Public Safety.

Chesapeake College will conduct drills and exercises to evaluate emergency response procedures. Upon the completion of any drills and exercises, an after action review will take place to assess the response procedures.

All buildings are generally open from 7:00AM to 9:30PM Monday through Thursday and 7:00AM to 4:30PM on Fridays. Certain academic buildings are also open for weekend classes and special events. When the College is closed, all buildings are locked and secured by Public Safety Officers as appropriate for scheduled activities. Public Safety Officers responding to requests for access to buildings ensure that such access is appropriate.

Chesapeake College has no residential facilities.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in regular CRASE training sessions regarding active shooter events. In addition, all members of the campus community are encouraged to review the following video.

APP FAQs:

  • Do I have to have Location Services enabled on my phone to use the AlertAware Mobile App?
Although recommended to ensure your organization knows your location when initiating an Emergency or Incident Report, it is not necessary to enable Location Services to receive emergency alerts or initiate Emergency/Incident Reports.
  • When registering to receive mobile alerts on my AlertAware Mobile App, do I have to enter a mobile, work, or phone phone number?
Although recommended, you do not have to enter a phone number when registering to receive push notifications. However, if your organization uses the Emergency/Incident Report feature, having a phone number associated with the report can help ensure responders know how to reach you in case person-to-person voice communication is needed.
  • Will I be able to receive emergency notifications if my phone is silenced/locked?
Yes, if you have enabled Critical Alerts for the AlertAware Mobile App on your smart phone, any emergency alert your organization initiates that is identified as a Critical Alert will override your silenced device to help ensure you are aware of threats to your safety.
  • When I report an incident, where does my incident report go and who is monitoring this feature to help in the case of an emergency?
Incident and Emergency Reports are transmitted directly to Campus Police. Campus Police are immediately notified of an emergency or incident via both email and SMS text. Emergency and Incident Reports can activate localized or organization-wide emergency alerts to ensure all who are potentially in harm’s way are aware of threats to their safety and recommended response actions.
  • Does the AlertAware Mobile App have a two-way chat feature?
Yes. Any time an Emergency or Incident Report is initiated, the organization or the reporting individual can initiate a two-way chat between Campus Police and the reporting individual.
  • What is the Safety Contact button on my app?
The Safety Contact button on the AlertAware Mobile App is used to automatically initiate a voice call between the AlertAware Mobile App user and Campus Police.
  • When I receive an alert on the AlertAware Mobile App, there are various polling options from which to choose; can I change my poll response after it has been submitted?
Absolutely! We recognize that circumstances often change as an incident matures; therefore, you have the ability to change the poll response you submitted during the initial alert acknowledgement to reflect your current circumstances.
  • Can I determine whether the AlertAware Mobile App has access to my camera and/or image library?
Yes, AlertAware Mobile App users can set camera/library permissions at the device level for the AlertAware Mobile App.
Chesapeake College has the ability to broadcast alert messages to every telephone (landline) that is activated on the campus network. The message(s) will reach offices and classrooms through the speakers on the telephones or those which are independently mounted throughout buildings.

Chesapeake College has the ability to send messages to every computer system that is activated on the network. The message(s) will reach computers in offices and classrooms if the computer is activated.

Building monitors will make announcements in every facility on the campus. Notifications will include a description of the event and what action(s) need to be taken. Students, staff and guests are permitted to have access to cell phones while on campus. At the Cambridge Center, Public Safety Officers will ensure faculty/staff have been notified and receive the necessary updates as deemed appropriate.
